Munchberg
Munchberg DP camp was located on the outskirts of Kassel, in a workers' village adjacent to a factory. The population of about 150 Jewish DPs lived in small, two- family houses. With its clean houses, small streets and shops, Munchberg was one of the rare camps to provide the DPs with a semblance of pre war life.
‘The people of the camp live in a former Arbeiter-Siedlung [german-workers housing]. The dwellings look fairly comfortable. Some attempt has been made to keep the surrounding grounds good looking- noted the ORT school inspector after his visit to Muchberg in the summer of 1947. [1]
The ORT school in Munchberg was set up in mid 1947, by the end of the year it run classes tailoring, dressmaking, dental technology, and auto mechanics and trained eighty-four students. According to the already quoted school inspector ORT vocational centre organized in the camp was located in a building that ‘looked pretty old form the outside but the rooms inside were quite usable.’ The director of the school was Leon Rudzki.
The camp was closed in March 1949.
