Prien
International Children’s Center in Prien in Bavaria was operating between mid 1946 and June 1949. In the end of 1947 the school housed approximately 200 children, about one third of them was orthodox and attended a synagougue established in the camp.
The school was situated in former German sanatorium situated in beautiful surroundings on the Chiemsee. The school had extensive grounds which were used as playing grounds as well as farming and gardening training centres. The children often had their classes outdoors. They had swimming and rowing classes in the summer and skiing tours were organized in the winter. Children attended compulsory classes in the morning and had voluntary training provided by ORT in the afternoon. The director of the ORT school in Prien was Dr Alexander Stern. The main problems encountered in Prien were lack of teachers and educational materials. Children were not used to attend regular classes and did not have uniformed educational background. In many cases tuition had to be given on individual basis.
Despite good living conditions, Prien had a reputation for lax discipline. Children lived in different hotels and were not supervised. A number of Prien inhabitants have surpassed the age limit for residents of children’s camps but did not want to move out of the camp. In one instance, children who were meant to be transferred to another centre reacted with hunger strike. The children kept together according to the nationality and despite constant efforts of the staff to integrate different national groups, there were constant conflicts between them as well as between Jewish and non-Jewish children.
Despite problems with organizing emigration of the children and supplying them with adequate documentation, the majority of children succeeded in emigrating to Canada. Before leaving Prien they were provided with additional English language classes as well as orientation classes on life in Canada. A teacher sent to the camp by the Canadian Jewish Congress also taught them volley ball, baseball and basket ball.
