The attached report was submitted to the meeting to the executive of the World ORT Union in Zurich in November 1947.Similarly to reports from other countries for this period, this report discusses mainly the final examinations of the 1946/1947 school year and the new admissions which have taken place in the majority of the European ORT institutions.

The report from Austria shows ORT almost a year into its work with Jewish displaced persons in the country. Its first part focuses on the so called ‘central schools’ that is schools created in the largest Austrian cities- in Salzburg, Linz and Vienna. It shows the rapidly growing number of students in ORT schools and the way that the schools dealt with this issue, as well as school’s cooperation with other educational establishments in Austria’s main cities.

The report shows the impact of the growing number of illegal Jewish refugees entering Austria and the subsequent need of establishing new schools in transit camps where they are based. It describes the stages of building schools in camps- arrangements with the camp management, obtaining of premises and employment of suitable instructors.
