Ahlem Training Farm
The Ahlem farm DP kibbutz was organized by ORT in the summer of 1946. The kibbutz was based in the former German horticulture school and sponsored by the Jewish Agency for Palestine. The farm and surrounding forty acres of land was requisitioned in a dilapidated condition, partly bombed and severely neglected and was restored by the young DPs themselves. In 1947 ORT Bulletin reported:
'The Ahlem Agricultural Training Farm is designed especially for DP’s who wish to prepare for emigration to Palestine. We have recently supplied it with tractors, ploughs, seed, fertilizers, etc. We are also building a special house at Ahlem to be used especially for classes.’[1]
The majority of fifty-seven DPs living in Ahlem were former inhabitants of Belsen DP camp. During their stay at the farm they were trained in all aspects of agriculture. In the winter, when practical work in the fields could not be carried out, Ahlem DPs engaged in vocational courses offered by other nearby ORT schools. They also attended classes in Hebrew language and geography as well as other subjects taught by DP teachers from Hamburg. Food produced by the farm was distributed in the nearby DP hospitals, convalescent homes and schools. Ahlem farm was closed down by October 1948.
